Fence Board Calculator
Calculate the exact number of fence boards or pickets needed. Account for board width, gaps, and waste factor.
How It Works
The total number of boards is calculated by dividing the total fence length (in inches) by the board width plus gap. The waste factor adds extra boards to account for cutting waste, defective boards, and installation errors. Board height determines the length of each board you need to purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I measure fence board width?
Lumber dimensions use nominal sizes. A '1x6' board actually measures 0.75" × 5.5". A '1x4' measures 0.75" × 3.5". Always use actual dimensions for accurate calculations.
What size gap should I leave between pickets?
For privacy fences: no gap. For semi-privacy: 0.5-1". For decorative picket fences: 2-3". Even privacy boards should have a tiny gap (~1/16") to allow for wood expansion, but this doesn't significantly affect board count.
Do I need to account for posts in my board count?
No, boards are attached to the face of the posts, so the board count is based on the total fence length. Posts don't create gaps in the board layout.
