This calculator determines the total number of posts by dividing your fence length by the post spacing and adding 1. Corner posts, end posts, and gate posts (2 per gate) are calculated separately as they require special treatment — often larger posts and more concrete. Do corner posts need to be bigger?
Yes, corner posts bear more lateral force. For wood fences, use 6x6 posts at corners instead of 4x4. For chain link, use terminal posts (2-3/8") instead of line posts (1-5/8") at all corners, ends, and gate locations.
Can I use gravel instead of concrete for fence posts?
Gravel drainage works for some applications, especially in well-drained sandy soil. However, concrete is recommended for gate posts, corner posts, privacy fences (wind load), and any fence over 4 feet tall. Concrete provides significantly more lateral strength.
How long does fence post concrete take to cure?
Fast-setting concrete sets in 20-40 minutes and can support weight in 4-6 hours. Standard concrete takes 24-48 hours to set. Full cure strength (for hanging gates) takes 5-7 days. Avoid putting stress on posts during curing.
